Women’s Mental Health within the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Group.
Women 4 Women Empowerment focuses on Women’s Mental Health for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) group in Southeast London (Southwark). Women from BAME have different experience of mental health system compared to white women. This resulted in high prevalence of Mental Health issue within the BAME group. The UK Government Statistics that were published in March 2019 showed that Black people were more than four times likely as white people to be detained under the Mental health Act. The 2017 Race Disparity Audit also showed that Black women are most likely to experience a common mental disorder, such as anxiety or depression.
BAME people have the same right as everyone else within the mental Health Services and treatments. Research pointed out that they face barriers in getting help. Some of these barriers include, not recognising that they have mental illness, Language, cultural, financial barriers, and mental health stigma are also the main reasons for not wanting to access mental health treatment and services. The social and economic inequalities also contribute to women’s mental health within the BAME group. They are more likely to experience poverty, homelessness and be unemployed, which can also increase the risk of developing mental health problem.
Raising awareness on Women’s Mental health problem within the BAME group is paramount to us. The underlying factors that are affecting them from not wanting to access Mental Health Services will also be addressed to help them gain their confidence and to understand the importance of accessing such services. We also provide sessions on how to access mental health services and treatments. Women 4 Women Empowerment creates the platform to encourage, support and assist BAME women to access mental health services through the NHS.
This organisation wants to ensure that BAME women with mental health issues access Mental Health Services to have professional treatments as they have same right as everyone else. Obtaining professional mental health services help them to have the appropriate treatments. This organisation also aims to raise awareness on Mental Health so that BAME women with mental health issues know when to seek for professional health services and how to go about it successfully.
